Flood Risk Management

Flood Risk Management includes all activities that focus on a decrease in flood risk. Principally, there are 2 options to lower the flood risk:
- reduction of the probability of flooding and flood risk assessment
- reduction of the consequences of a flood and flood consequence assessment and mitigation planning

Flood Forecasting

A Flood Forecasting system enables decision makers to disseminate a warning in case of a threat of flood. This is often a vital component of non-structural measures in Flood Risk Management Studies. The earlier and more reliable a forecast is, the better the preparation is and less damage will occur.

Flood control operations

At CONTINENTAL , we have extensive experience in flood control operations. Our experience in this area has been sharpened and refined over 15 years of computer modeling of floods. We strive in the future to deploy operations staff on standby 24 hours a day during major flood events to manage infrastructure and to plan and implement water releases to minimize the impact of flooding.

River & drainage engineering and flood plain modeling and mapping

Knowledge of hydraulics in rivers and lakes is essential for effective water management, as changes in river systems may affect discharges, water levels and flow velocities. CONTINENTAL has this knowledge and applies it in studies to manage rivers in order to optimize the combination of various interests such as flooding, navigation, ecology, recreation and agriculture.

CONTINENTAL has undertaken complete flood study, flood plain hydrodynamic modeling and drainage design of water storage and conveyance structures, dam spillways, urban settlements and several road projects covering drains, culverts and bridges in various climatic and geotechnical conditions in southern Africa, especially in Botswana, Malawi and Mozambique. We have also undertaken flood plain risk mapping for mining, development and residential sites, flood waterways and other facilities.

Flood Mitigation and Disaster management

Despite expert management and protective measures disasters do always occur. With society continuing to emphasize the anticipation of hazards, preparedness and taking responsibility has become increasingly important to governments. Planning for mitigation measures for floods is both prompt-action requiring effort and looking for sustained flood plain planning for flood protection as well as beneficial use of the flood plains in the retrospect depending on the nature, extent and locality of flood occurrence.

Hydroinformatics and GIS

In the specialty area of Hydroinformatics and GIS, CONTINENTAL experts combine knowledge and experience in the fields of design, development and implementation of applications and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

CONTINENTAL also participated in the development of Management Information Systems (MIS) for water sector institutions at national levels so that each national institution and its departments accomplish its mandate through more efficient and re-engineered decision making platform. User requirement surveys and specialist expertise is utilized to develop a robust spatially-intelligent information management system that is deployed in remotely accessible platforms such as the worldwide web.

Our Corporate experience to these services:

We are conversant with the application of several commercially available hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software. Apart from commercially available technical hardware and software that we employ in our projects, we have a number of inhouse developed software, monograms, etc that are used to solve several related problems to effectively render our services.
